Philanthropy

Philanthropy is doing something to better the lives of others for the greater good. Giving money is an important part of philanthropy.

We looked at philanthropy’s giving for disability in Australia and found that

  • Money given for disability is small in comparison to other areas

  • The philanthropic donations focus on a single condition or disability health issue and in one Australian state

  • The philanthropists who give to disability do not collaborate to have a greater impact

To achieve the best outcomes for people with disability, we believe that philanthropy will have to work together and significantly increase their giving for disability inclusion.

Coordinating a philanthropic community

Philanthropic investment in disability in Australia is small and connected to specific support needs. But breakthroughs happen when groups of people with different ways of thinking and viewing the world come to the same table. The Achieve Foundation is engaging people with disability to build that ‘table’ and start the conversation.

We are bringing philanthropists together to facilitate the growth of giving to improve outcomes for all people with disability by targeting systems and attitudes.

Diversity and inclusion are important to strengthen our communities and society. The rewards and potential for inclusion – for individuals and society – are limitless.

Be part of a change that will benefit and enrich Australia.

“Inclusion has to be driven by everyone. The whole community needs to be informed by a true dialogue with people with disability, so that people are seen to have equal value, regardless of their disability. Now is the time to make that happen.”

Philanthropy research

The Achieve Foundation commissioned research to investigate the under explored area of disability philanthropy and fundraising in an Australia. By highlighting the effective use of evidence-based decision-making, we can help build a solid foundation for the sector that benefits all groups who are striving to improve social inclusion and create a sense of belonging for people with disability

The field of disability philanthropy in Australia is fragmented, and no apparent ‘big picture’ emerging that indicates a planned or informed vision. Now is the time to change this. Research, advocacy, and innovation are significant parts of a positive approach to re-framing Australian identity as truly inclusive of people with disability as part of a creative, and diverse community.
